Description
This recipe guides you through making a delightful grilled tuna sandwich, offering two delicious options: one featuring a perfectly seared tuna steak, and the other a classic, creamy tuna salad, both nestled between slices of golden, toasted bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (6 ounce) tuna steak or 1 (5 ounce) can tuna, drained
- 2 slices bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or rye recommended)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for tuna steak option)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (for tuna salad option)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped celery (for tuna salad option)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion (for tuna salad option)
- 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard (for tuna salad option)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon butter or cooking spray (for grilling bread)
- Optional additions: lettuce, tomato slices, cheese (cheddar or provolone recommended)
Instructions
- For Seared Tuna Steak Sandwich:
- Pat the tuna steak dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the tuna steak for 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer for desired doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- For Tuna Salad Sandwich:
- In a medium bowl, flake the drained canned tuna.
- Add mayonnaise, celery, red onion, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well until combined.
- Assemble and Grill the Sandwich:
- Butter one side of each bread slice, or spray with cooking spray.
- Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in a clean skillet or on a griddle over medium heat.
- If using tuna steak, place the seared tuna steak on the bread. If using tuna salad, spread the tuna salad evenly over the bread.
- Add any optional ingredients like cheese, lettuce, or tomato.
- Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side up.
- Grill for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the filling is heated through (and cheese is melted, if using).
- Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot.
Notes
- Adjust the cooking time for the tuna steak to your preferred level of doneness.
- For a richer flavor, toast the bread before adding the tuna.
- Experiment with different types of bread to find your favorite.
- Feel free to add other vegetables to your tuna salad, like pickles or capers.
