Description
Easy and delicious BBQ pulled pork sandwiches made in a slow cooker.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 kg pork shoulder or butt
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 8-10 hamburger buns or rolls
- Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, extra BBQ sauce
Instructions
- Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder. Season generously with salt and black pepper.
- In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Rub this spice mixture all over the pork.
- Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of your slow cooker.
- Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onions and garlic.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar.
- Pour the BBQ sauce mixture over the pork.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours, until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
- Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or large platter. Reserve the liquid in the slow cooker.
- Using two forks, shred the pork. Discard any large pieces of fat.
- Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker with the reserved liquid. Stir to coat the pork in the sauce.
- If the sauce is too thin, you can thicken it by simmering it on the stovetop for a few minutes before returning the pork.
- Serve the pulled pork warm on hamburger buns or rolls. Add your favorite toppings like coleslaw or pickles.
Notes
- Pork shoulder or butt works best for pulled pork as it has enough fat to keep it moist during the long cooking time.
- Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to your preferred level of spice.
- You can make the pulled pork ahead of time and reheat it on the stovetop or in the slow cooker on the warm setting.
- Leftover pulled pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
