Description

Easy and delicious BBQ pulled pork sandwiches made in a slow cooker.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 kg pork shoulder or butt
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 8-10 hamburger buns or rolls
  • Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, extra BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder. Season generously with salt and black pepper.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Rub this spice mixture all over the pork.
  3. Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  4. Place the seasoned pork shoulder on top of the onions and garlic.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar.
  6. Pour the BBQ sauce mixture over the pork.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-6 hours, until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  8. Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or large platter. Reserve the liquid in the slow cooker.
  9. Using two forks, shred the pork. Discard any large pieces of fat.
  10. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker with the reserved liquid. Stir to coat the pork in the sauce.
  11. If the sauce is too thin, you can thicken it by simmering it on the stovetop for a few minutes before returning the pork.
  12. Serve the pulled pork warm on hamburger buns or rolls. Add your favorite toppings like coleslaw or pickles.

Notes

  • Pork shoulder or butt works best for pulled pork as it has enough fat to keep it moist during the long cooking time.
  • Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to your preferred level of spice.
  • You can make the pulled pork ahead of time and reheat it on the stovetop or in the slow cooker on the warm setting.
  • Leftover pulled pork can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
